North American oil producers are expanding the use of digital platforms to improve field performance and reduce operational costs, with early results pointing to significant gains in efficiency and equipment life.

In the Permian Basin, one operator has partnered with US oilfield services group Halliburton to manage electric submersible pumps (ESPs) remotely. These pumps, which are critical for extracting oil from deep wells, are vulnerable to gas interference and unstable flows that often lead to failure.

Halliburton’s Intelevate platform collects real-time performance data from ESPs across Texas and New Mexico, allowing engineers to detect anomalies and adjust operations without sending staff to the field. Since the system was deployed, average pump life has increased by 60 per cent, monthly site visits have dropped by 50, and the operator has reported savings of roughly $35,000 per month.

“Remote optimisation has become a cornerstone of modern oilfield strategy,” said a senior industry analyst. “Operators are realising they cannot afford to fly blind anymore. Real-time control means resilience and results.”

The shift reflects a broader trend across the sector. Digital tools are becoming essential amid labour shortages, rising operating costs and increasing scrutiny over emissions. Remote monitoring and automation also reduce the environmental impact by limiting travel and improving equipment efficiency.

Adoption, however, remains uneven. Smaller operators often face barriers in integrating new systems with older infrastructure, and concerns persist over cybersecurity and workforce readiness. Despite this, larger producers are accelerating investment in digital oilfield solutions.

Halliburton and its peers are positioning these technologies not just as operational upgrades but as strategic assets in a tightening energy market. Platforms like Intelevate support faster decision-making and predictive maintenance, extending asset life while helping producers manage uncertainty in both commodity prices and regulatory demands.

The move towards digitalisation marks a shift from traditional, labour-intensive practices to data-led field management. Many in the industry see this transition as critical to long-term competitiveness.
