The oil patch is getting a software update. North America’s three oilfield-service behemoths, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes and Halliburton, are moving away from one-time software licences and towards subscription-based, cloud-native platforms. The shift to software-as-a-service (SaaS) promises lower upfront costs, regular updates and more agile operations.

Schlumberger leads the charge with DELFI, its cloud platform that integrates planning, drilling and production workflows. Sold entirely as a subscription, DELFI has reportedly slashed subsurface study times by 40% and boosted production efficiency by up to 30%, thanks to rapid implementation cycles the firm calls “NextSprints”.

Baker Hughes is reinforcing its digital bets. On May 28th it extended a partnership with C3 AI through 2028, aiming to deliver AI-based applications that predict failures, optimise production and reduce emissions. The tools, designed for outcomes rather than infrastructure, reflect a broader push for automation across the energy value chain.

Halliburton is not far behind. Its hybrid iEnergy cloud and Zeus IQ fracturing software are gaining popularity outside North America, with recent contracts in Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. The firm’s latest earnings report, released on July 22nd, highlighted steady growth in recurring digital revenue.

For analysts, this is more than a pricing model tweak. Subscriptions offer flexibility, allow operators to scale up or down easily and keep software constantly updated. That makes advanced technology more accessible, especially for mid-sized producers.

Still, challenges remain. Integrating these platforms across diverse operations is no small feat, and cybersecurity is a growing concern, particularly for smaller firms with fewer IT resources. Yet the direction of travel is clear. The “digital oilfield” is no longer theoretical. In a market where every barrel and byte counts, what matters now is not just having tools, but what they deliver.
