Smarter, Cleaner Oilfields: CECO’s Bold Profire Play

CECO Environmental has expanded its presence in the oil and gas sector through the $122.7mn acquisition of Profire Energy, a move aimed at combining environmental engineering with advanced automation to improve efficiency and reduce emissions across energy operations.

Announced in late 2024 and completed in early 2025, the deal brings Profire’s automation and burner-management systems into CECO’s portfolio. These technologies allow operators to monitor and control combustion with greater precision, improving safety and cutting carbon output. The integration strengthens CECO’s position in upstream and midstream markets, aligning its technology base with growing demand for cleaner, data-driven energy systems.

“This move positions us to better meet our customers’ growing need for automated, efficient, and sustainable operations,” said Todd Gleason, CECO’s chief executive. The company reported solid revenue growth and rising orders in 2025 following the acquisition, reflecting what it described as strong market confidence in its digital-environmental strategy.

Analysts see the transaction as part of a wider industry trend linking automation with environmental performance. As oilfield operators respond to tighter emissions standards and operational cost pressures, technologies that enable real-time monitoring and predictive control are becoming essential to maintaining competitiveness.

The deal also highlights how medium-sized industrial firms are moving alongside larger peers such as SLB and Baker Hughes to shape the next phase of digital oilfield development. Integrating Profire’s technology, however, may present challenges around software alignment and innovation speed.

Executives said the acquisition represents more than portfolio expansion. It signals a shift in strategy where automation and sustainability converge as core business drivers.

As CECO advances the integration of Profire’s systems and extends its international reach, the company expects to play a larger role in defining the oilfield of the future, one that is more intelligent, efficient, and less carbon intensive.
