North American oil producers are increasing their use of digital tools as they respond to higher water volumes, tighter regulation and ongoing cost pressures. AI-based water management has become a focus, with operators assessing whether new systems can simplify one of the sector’s most complex logistical tasks.

Intelligent Core has launched its CORE Flow AI platform to support more efficient handling of produced water. The system uses real-time data to predict potential flow disruptions, allowing operators to take earlier corrective action. Although still at an initial stage, the technology is intended to help manage a network of pipelines, disposal wells and recycling facilities that has grown steadily with production.

The initiative sits within a wider shift toward automation, remote monitoring and data-driven decision-making. Companies including SLB are testing tools aimed at improving efficiency and reducing operational risks. Consultants say digital systems could strengthen safety practices and aid compliance, though full benefits will depend on the quality of data and the ability to integrate new tools with existing infrastructure.

Adoption is likely to vary across regions as operators weigh regulatory demands and local geology. AI applications remain highly specific, and many producers are assessing performance before committing to broader deployment.

Early field trials have delivered encouraging but limited results, prompting closer scrutiny from other industry groups. While digital technologies are expected to play a larger role over time, their impact will depend on continued testing and gradual uptake across the sector.
