The energy industry’s digital ambitions just got a major boost. Baker Hughes and C3 AI have renewed their high-stakes alliance, aiming to push artificial intelligence deeper into the core of industrial operations.

Announced in late May, the extended partnership will now run through mid-2028. It builds on a venture first launched in 2019, one that has already delivered AI-driven tools to major players like Shell and Eni. These tools forecast equipment failures, track emissions, and cut excess inventory. They offer practical fixes for an industry under pressure.

This is not just a continuation. Baker Hughes is now putting its own skin in the game, committing to use C3 AI systems more broadly across its operations. That shift signals growing faith in AI’s ability to solve real-world problems, not just theoretical ones.

“Our strategy is rooted in deploying technologies that drive measurable impact,” said Lorenzo Simonelli, Baker Hughes’ CEO. “This partnership helps us do just that.”

Energy companies face growing challenges: aging infrastructure, tighter emissions goals, and market swings that can derail planning. In that climate, speed and precision matter. AI, once a buzzword, is becoming a serious tool.

C3 AI’s CEO, Thomas Siebel, called the partnership a strategic win. The alliance, he said, has opened doors, built trust in the market, and racked up over $500 million in bookings.

Now, the two firms are branching out. Beyond oil and gas, they are targeting sectors like chemicals and manufacturing, where the demand for industrial AI is rising. Customization and system integration remain hurdles, but both sides believe the upside is bigger than the risk.

“AI is central to how we operate now,” said Uwem Ukpong of Baker Hughes. “It is not just about automation. It is about faster, clearer decisions.”

For the broader industry, the message is clear: standing still is not an option. As competitors build their own digital tools, the Baker Hughes and C3 AI team is setting the pace, where data meets industry and efficiency is no longer optional.
